FAQ

Q: How reliable is this database?

A: The marks that are listed in this database are obtained from students who have previously sat the Higher School Certificate. In order to obtain their raw marks, those students would have had to purchase their raw marks from NESA (formerly BOS and BOSTES). The data has not been independently vetted and relies on past students to accurately provide their marks. Note that as papers vary each year, the standards of marking will also naturally change. Hence there is variation between each year. The marks should only be taken as a guide and not an expectation of future years.

Q: What is the Unweighted Raw Mark?

A: Each question has a mark associated with it. The Unweighted Raw Mark is simply the total sum of all of these marks.

Q: What is the Weighted Raw Mark?

A: In subjects where there are option topics (e.g. Chemistry: Industrial Chemistry or Shipwrecks, Corrosion and Conservation etc.), these are marked against a standard marking scheme for all options. If a topic is marked favourably or unfavourably, NESA will scale the Unweighted Raw Mark to reflect the difficulty of each option topic. Note that this is not the same as aligning or the scaling that is applied to convert the HSC marks to an ATAR. In subjects where there are no option topics, the Unweighted Raw Mark is equal to the Weighted Raw Mark.

Q: My subject isn't listed. Are there marks available for my subject?

A: The database is typically up to date. You may still contact us via email to confirm whether or not there are marks available: contact@rawmarks.info

Q: How can I help?

A: If you have marks to contribute, you may directly edit a page and add your marks. Please ensure the formatting is consistent. You may also email us your marks at the email address listed above. We understand and appreciate that you are required to purchase your marks, so we thank you for your contribution. You can also help us by mentioning us on discussion forums, Facebook groups etc. If you have any other suggestions, please send us an email.
